Windows Mobile 7 Suite Review

Windows Mobile 7

Windows Mobile 7

Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 7 has met the expectations of consumers, but Windows Mobile 7 enthusiastic mobile phone users looking forward to enjoying the new mobile with the Windows Mobile 7 operating system will have to put their expectations on hold until late 2010.

Moreover, Microsoft’s software giant UK head of mobility, Phil Moore, has said that the company will not launch latest Windows Mobile until the latter part of 2010.

However, Moore also said that the near release will as well allow Microsoft to give the enterprise users and general Windows mobile users exactly what they want, which will include focus in adaptability of the touch base User Interface.

Microsoft’s verdict to delay the release of Windows Mobile 7 is perhaps not especially given that platform stopgap Windows Mobile 6.5 was launched to fill the gap when the seventh version of the mobile operating package missed its initial 2009 completion target.

However, great commitments related to a product release after 12 months are unlikely to help Microsoft’s position in the global Smartphone market.

With 46 percent of the market, the Nokia’s Symbian is at the top of the pile. The BlackBerry is with 21 percent, and Apple’s iPhone operating system is with 18 percent, and the Google’s Android managed to secure 3.5 percent of the market.

It's been nearly three years, since we first learned of Windows Mobile 7; in that time, the OS having flipped, flopped and morphed to the point that what has arrived today in 2010 bears little to no resemblance to what was envisioned in early 2008.

And that's a good thing.

As the smartphone OS the world has advanced in recent years, Microsoft needed to start fresh, to re-think what a Microsoft mobile OS should be.  And that's what they've done.

Windows Mobile 7, renamed Windows Phone 7, is the result of this soul searching.

In this Pocket PC Central Product Brief, we'll provide an aggregation of rumors and official statements regarding the upcoming Windows Phone 7 OS.  This information will continue to be updated over the remainder of 2010, so drop back by regularly.

Windows Mobile and Smartphones ?

When you are looking for more functionality than the average device offers, you have the choice from a broad range of smartphones and PDAs. Both types of devices not only differ physically but also as far as operation system is concerned. The better you know which functions you are going to use on a frequent base, the easier it is to make your choice. The market for PDAs that won't let you call but only use email and visit the Internet decreased drastically. Most current PDAs are handheld computers that also offer the option to call.

Smartphone or PDA?

Differences Symbian & Windows Mobile

Smartphones

Smartphones on the other hand are primary meant for calling but are more and more used for all kinds of business like keeping an electronic agenda, photographing, music and Internet. Nokia's smartphones indicate clearly how much attention Nokia paid to the manner of using the device for calling. PDA calling functions work just a tad more difficult but on the other hand it is easier to manage incoming and outgoing mail. These are the differences between Symbian and Windows Mobile explained in a nutshell. So it is not surprising Nokia as a cell phone manufacturer holds on to Symbian.

Symbian

Symbian Phones

Operating systems for mobile phones

The most recent versions of both operating systems show that the differences are becoming less evident and that the disadvantages of both systems are also vanishing. Looking at Nokia's most advanced device, the Nokia E90 Communicator, you can hardly claim that this device is not fully equipped with every function you need for comfortable email and Internet use. Nowadays a lot is changing which is also proved by the choices manufacturers of these devices make. Read the full Windows Mobile vs Symbian OS article.

Windows Mobile 7 Overview with Images

Blog News Channel somehow managed to get their hands on an internal Microsoft document that outlines the WindowWindows Mobile 7 Keyboards Mobile 7 features. The document is from last summer, and as it stands right now Windows Mobile 7 isn't scheduled to ship until 2009. That's quite a gap, so it's likely that some things will still change.

With that being said the document implies that Windows Mobile 7 will carry forward with a multi-touch interface that will surely bring out the unfriendly side of Apple fans. The on-screen keyboard (pictured above) looks "vaguely" similar to that of the iPhone. And then there are the gestures:

Windows Mobile 7 App Selector

As you can see it takes on a Vista-like appearance, and I do have to admit that it looks rather slick. Far better than the current Windows Mobile.

One key feature that will distinguish Windows Mobile 7 from the current iPhone is the ability to recognize device movements as gestures. By that I mean you could shake the device in a predefined motion to have it wake up.

Something that really blew me away, however, was that one of their screenshots showed the device running Office 2007! If Microsoft can get a full-scale version of Office efficiently running on Windows Mobile I think they will deserve a huge round of applause:

Windows Mobile 7 Office 2007

I'm sure this type of interface is really going to take the mobile market by storm just as it did with the iPhone, and I hope that Microsoft does it right. The screenshots all look really good, but that doesn't mean the end product will be a fluid and polished mobile operating system. What's unfortunate for Microsoft is that Apple will probably be releasing their second generation iPhone around the same time that Windows Mobile 7 launches, and with that Apple will likely be incorporating the most requested user features. It will be as if Apple is polishing up their touch interface while Microsoft is just getting started. The key for Microsoft will be how many devices will be available at launch, and what their prices will be.
